Overview
OpenAI describes Dots as remarkably capable, always-on agents. You give your Dot a name and a cartoon look, then talk to it like a colleague: by chat or voice call in ChatGPT, or inside Slack and Microsoft Teams. It carries the same context across all of them, and iMessage and RCS texting is on a waitlist.
The big difference from ChatGPT's older agent mode is initiative. When you are not talking to it, a Dot runs what OpenAI calls proactive research: it scans the apps you connected, read-only, and comes back with suggestions. In one early test it noticed an unbilled freelance article, drafted the invoice from an email thread and sent it once the user approved.
Through OpenAI's plugin ecosystem a Dot can reach more than 4,000 apps, including Gmail, Google Docs, GitHub, Slack and QuickBooks. For coding it hands work to Codex, and teams can collaborate with a Dot in the new ChatGPT Space. You start with one Dot; OpenAI says teams of Dots and role-based specialist Dots for companies are next.
Strengths

- Work it starts in Codex or ChatGPT Work still uses your normal limits, and the cost of heavy proactive use is not published
- Launched in the same week OpenAI disclosed several incidents involving its research agents
