What a personal agent really costs
Subscription prices are simple. What catches people out is usage: agents run for hours, and some plans count background work against your limits. Here is every plan, with the fine print.

The costs nobody puts on the pricing page
Work counts, chat does not
With Dots, conversations are free of limits, but anything your Dot kicks off in Codex or ChatGPT Work uses your plan's normal allowance. OpenAI has not said how much proactive research consumes.
Tokens, not tasks
Muse sells weekly token allowances. A long browsing job can use far more tokens than a dozen quick questions, so the free tier runs out faster on agent-heavy days.
Agents repeat themselves
An agent sends the same long context on every step. Cached input pricing matters more than the headline rate: GPT-6.1 Sol charges $0.10 per million cached tokens against $2 for fresh input.
Purchases are real money
An agent that can buy things can overspend. Use a virtual card with a low limit and require approval above a threshold.

What is the cheapest personal AI agent?
Meta Muse is free up to 100 million tokens a week, and OpenClaw is free software where you only pay for the model. Among paid plans, Google AI Pro at $19.99 includes Gemini Spark in the US, and Claude Pro at $20 includes Claude's agent features.
Do I need the $500 ChatGPT plan for Dots?
No. Every Pro tier includes one Dot, starting at $100 a month. The $500 tier adds the highest limits and Astra Ultrafast speed.
Why is the $200 ChatGPT Pro plan worse now?
At DevDay 2026 OpenAI cut its Work and Codex allowance from 20x to 10x Plus usage and halved GPT-6 Pro messages to 100 a week, while launching the $500 tier on top. Existing subscribers keep old limits for a transition period and get a one-time credit.
